Healing is part of every covenant that God has made with men and for man. In Ex. 15:26, The Lord God introduced himself as YHWH Rapha, “The Lord who heals you”. The promises that include physical healing and protection are laced throughout scripture. Jesus did not come to give us a lesser Covenant. He came to give us a better covenant with better promises (Heb. 7:22 and Heb. 8:6).
Why are the good words that God gave us called promises? Promises must be received in order to be fulfilled. Our covenant with the heavenly Father through the Lord Jesus Christ is not based upon any physical act that we have to accomplish or could accomplish. This Covenant cut from the body and blood of Christ Jesus on the cross was completed by Jesus and our Heavenly Father without our participation or help. Just as Abraham's covenant with God was made by God Himself with Himself for Abraham, our covenant was made by God Himself with Himself for us.
After the covenant was made, God gave Abraham a sign for his offspring to show that they were participating in the Covenant. This was the sign of circumcision. Every descendent of Abraham, who was circumcised was included in the covenant. The circumcision was made on a baby eight days old. It was the circumcision of the foreskin of every male child. This simple surgery that removed extra flesh was the sign that they were blessed by God. The child had no say in the matter. He was eight days old. He didn’t get a vote. God made the covenant with Himself while Abraham was asleep. The Lord gave Abraham the sign of circumcision which no one but the most intimate people would ever see. It was a hidden sign. It was a private sign. It wasn’t on display for the world, but the world knew about it.
Our covenant from God has a similar sign. It is called the circumcision of the heart. (More tomorrow…)
