“God Is Light”

Reflection

“This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.”

This is not John’s opinion of God. This is the message he heard from Jesus. God is light. He is the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. He does not flicker. There is no hidden side in Him waiting to turn on you.

To walk in the light is to live in the light. Light lets you see. You can see the path. You can see what would trip you. You can follow the footsteps of Jesus with a clear eye. Stumbling while you are still following Him is not the same as choosing another road. Sin is taking the wrong path on purpose. It is missing the mark because the heart aimed at the wrong mark.

Walk means live. Fellowship means participation — communion. You cannot be one with the light and one with the darkness at the same time. Hiding and communion cannot share the same room. This Word is not here to shame you. It is calling you into the truth. Come into the open. Live where He is.

“If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” We do not manufacture the light. We live in the light He already is. Communion with one another is the overflow. And the blood does not wait until we finish becoming perfect. It cleanses us as we walk — present tense, all sin, the finished work applied to honest hearts.

Application

Today, come out of hiding. You do not have to clean yourself before you step into the light. Stay on the path with Jesus. If you stumble while following, get up and keep your eyes on Him. Do not aim at another mark.

Renew your mind with this truth: God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. As you live in that light, the blood of Jesus cleanses you from all sin. Speak that. Walk in the open. Let communion with the Father and with His people become the way you live.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are light, and in You is no darkness at all. Thank You that we do not have to hide. We come into the open. We live in the light as You are in the light. We receive the blood of Jesus that cleanses us from all sin. Keep our feet on the path of Your Son. Make our communion with You and with one another true. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.
