“If We Confess Our Sins”

Reflection

John has just called us into the light. Then he closes the door on two lies.

The first lie is this: “We have no sin.” If we say that, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. Walking in the light is not pretending we have already arrived. Light exposes. It does not flatter. The one who hides behind a claim of sinlessness is still in the dark.

The second lie is worse: “We have not sinned.” That does not only deceive us. It makes God a liar, and His Word is not in us. God has already told the truth about sin — and about the Savior. To deny our need is to deny what He said.

Between those two lies stands a promise:

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Confess means to say the same thing God says. It is not begging a reluctant Father. It is agreement. We come into the open and call sin what He calls it. Then we stand on what He has already done in Jesus. He is faithful — He keeps His Word. He is just — the blood has already answered the debt. Forgiveness and cleansing are not rewards for a perfect confession. They are the faithful response of God to an honest heart.

This is New Covenant life. We do not clean ourselves in order to walk in the light. We walk in the light, and when the light shows what is there, we agree with God. He forgives. He cleanses. All unrighteousness — not part of it.

Application

Today, do not cover what the light has shown. Do not excuse it. Do not deny it. Say the same thing God says, then receive what the blood has already secured.

Renew your mind with this truth: He is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse. Confession is not your performance. It is your agreement with His Word. Speak that. Come into the open. Let the truth live in you.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that we do not have to hide and we do not have to pretend. We agree with Your Word. Where we have sinned, we confess it. You are faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. We receive that cleansing by the blood of Jesus. Let the truth live in us. Keep us walking in the light. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.
