The Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus
Romans 8:1-2 “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh,”
The law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus has made us free from the law of sin and death.
Many people don’t realize that they are free from the bondage of sin. Christ Jesus has become sin on the cross and died as sin on the cross. Picture an animal that was chained to a tree for a long time until someone came and removed the chain from the tree but did not remove the chain from the animal. The animal will continue to stay close to that tree because it doesn’t understand that it can leave the sphere of bondage.
Jesus has removed the chain but people often walk around choosing to carry the chains of their past bondage. They do not understand how to lay down the chain and move on in a new life of freedom. Sin’s eternal penalty has been dealt with. Jesus has set us free of it. However, actions still have consequences. If we are caught in a lie, people lose trust in us. “Don’t be deceived… we shall reap whatever we sow.” Sinfulness still produces its natural consequences, just like that animal carrying around the chain and staying next to the tree.
This is why the Scripture tells us to “be transformed by the renewing of the mind.” We get to think differently. We get to adopt the mind of Christ. We get to apply our faith to the promises we find in the loving word of God. We get to apply our actions to what is good and godly. We get to sow to the spirit instead of the flesh. We get to pull weeds in our garden and plant new crops there. We get to determine our own harvest.
We are invited out of the law of sin and death into The Law of The Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus which is free from condemnation and guilt. We get to leave the tree and the chains behind and walk in newness of life. We get to act like we were never chained to the tree in the first place. We get to act like we’ve been walking hand in hand with God from the beginning. His love is more than enough. It has covered and washed away all our chains and sins.
