It was judicial hardening — the consequence of a people who had seen the light again and again, yet refused to respond. They heard, but would not understand. They saw, but would not perceive. Their hearts had become so resistant that even the coming of the Messiah in their midst could not turn them.

Jesus stood in the glow of the great Temple lamps during the Feast of Tabernacles and said, “I am the light of the world.”

The very generation that heard those words would soon witness the fulfillment of Isaiah’s “how long?” In AD 70, Jerusalem and its Temple were destroyed. The cities were laid waste. The judgment pronounced centuries earlier reached its climax because they rejected the Light when He stood right in front of them.

This is a sobering reality.

The same light that brings life can become judgment when it is repeatedly refused. Nations and individuals can reach a point where they have participated so deeply in wickedness that they leave God no other way than to allow justice to fall. Sometimes the people themselves rise up. Sometimes another power becomes the sword of justice. But the root cause is the same: persistent rejection of the light.

Yet even in this warning there is hope.

The light has not stopped shining. Jesus is still the Light of the world. For every heart that chooses to respond today — for every person who says, “I will follow You” — the promise remains: “He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

Application

Today, ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart: Is there any area where I have been resisting the light? Where have I seen truth but chosen to look away? Bring that area to Jesus right now. Renew your mind with this truth: The light that judges is the same light that saves. Choose to respond while grace is still drawing you. Walk in the light today — obey what you already know, confess what has been hidden, and follow Jesus with fresh surrender. Your decision to walk in the light can break cycles of hardening in your own life and become a testimony that helps someone else turn before it is too late.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that Jesus is the Light of the world. Thank You that His light both exposes and saves. We humble ourselves before You today. Forgive us for any resistance or hardness of heart. Deliver us from judicial hardening. Let Your light shine into every dark place in our lives. Help us respond quickly while You are near. May we walk in the light so that we do not stumble, and may our lives become a testimony that draws others to the Savior before judgment falls. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.

Seeking Jesus First - April 5, 2026

Part 2: “I Am the Light of the World”

Please Read John 8:12 (NKJV)

Reflection

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

This was not a gentle metaphor. Jesus was making one of the strongest claims of His ministry. During the Feast of Tabernacles, the Temple courts were illuminated each night by four massive golden lampstands. The light from those lamps could be seen across Jerusalem, reminding the people of God’s presence with Israel in the wilderness and pointing forward to the promised Messiah.

When Jesus stood in that setting and declared, “I am the light of the world,” the Jews would have immediately heard the echo of Scripture:

“The Lord is my light and my salvation” (Psalm 27:1)

“Light is sown for the righteous” (Psalm 97:11)

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light” (Isaiah 9:2)

God Himself called “the light of Israel” (Isaiah 10:17)

Jesus was not saying He brought light. He was saying He is the Light — the fulfillment of every promise, the One who breaks into darkness, the Creator who spoke “Let there be light” in the beginning. To follow Him means never walking in darkness but having the light of life.

The Pharisees immediately changed the subject. Instead of wrestling with the weight of His claim, they objected, “You bear witness of Yourself; Your witness is not true” (v. 13). Rather than responding to the revelation, they shifted to a technical argument about legal testimony. This is a common human response when the truth gets too close — we change the subject, raise objections, or attack the messenger instead of facing the claim.

In the Kingdom life, we are called to do the opposite. When Jesus declares “I am the light of the world,” our response should not be deflection but surrender. We renew our minds to recognize that Jesus is not one source of light among many — He is the Light. Renew your mind with this truth: Jesus is the Light of the world. Choose to follow Him deliberately in one specific area today — perhaps by bringing a hidden struggle into the light, obeying a prompting you’ve been avoiding, or simply declaring, “Lord, You are my light.” Let His light expose and heal. The light from these lamps was so bright it could be seen across much of Jerusalem. It reminded the people of God’s presence with Israel in the wilderness and pointed forward to the promised Messiah who would bring light into the darkness.

It was in this setting that Jesus stood and made one of the boldest declarations of His ministry:

“I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

The Jews would have immediately understood the weight of those words. Scripture had long portrayed light as the presence and salvation of God:

“The Lord is my light and my salvation” (Psalm 27:1)

“Light is sown for the righteous” (Psalm 97:11)

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light” (Isaiah 9:2)

Jesus was not saying He brought light. The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman caught in the act of adultery and stood her in the midst of the crowd. They said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do You say?”

They were not seeking justice — they were setting a trap. The Law of Moses clearly stated that both the man and the woman caught in adultery were to be put to death (Leviticus 20:10; Deuteronomy 22:22). Yet only the woman was brought forward. The man was conveniently missing. Their selective enforcement of the Law exposed their hypocrisy.

Jesus did not answer immediately. Instead, He stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger. When they continued pressing Him, He stood and said, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” Then He stooped down again and continued writing.

One by one, beginning with the oldest, the accusers left until only Jesus and the woman remained. He asked her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” She answered, “No one, Lord.” Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”

This is one of the most beautiful and powerful moments in the Gospels. Jesus did not deny the reality of her sin. He did not lower God’s standard. But He refused to let self-righteous, hypocritical men use the Law as a weapon. He upheld both truth and mercy perfectly.

In the Kingdom life, we are called to the same balance. We do not condone sin, but we also do not use the Law to crush people. Jesus offers forgiveness without compromise and calls us to a new life of holiness. “Go and sin no more” is both grace and command (truth).

Application

Today, ask the Holy Spirit to show you any area where you have been tempted to use truth as a weapon rather than as a tool for restoration. Renew your mind with this truth: Jesus offers both mercy and a call to holiness. If you are carrying shame or condemnation from past sin, hear His words today: “Neither do I condemn you.” Receive His forgiveness fully. Then take one practical step of obedience — “go and sin no more” — by turning away from that sin and walking in the new life He gives. If you have been quick to judge others, choose mercy and truth together today. Your response to grace can become a testimony that points someone else to the Savior who forgives and transforms.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the perfect balance of truth and mercy we see in Jesus. Thank You that He does not condemn those who come to Him, yet He calls us to holiness. Forgive us when we have used Your Word to judge harshly or when we have excused sin in our own lives. Today we receive Your mercy afresh. Cleanse us and help us “go and sin no more.” Renew our minds to show the same grace and truth to others. Let our lives reflect the heart of Jesus — full of compassion yet uncompromising in holiness. In the mighty name of our Lord and Christ, Jesus, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.

Seeking Jesus First - April 2, 2026

“Division Because of Him” Don't straddle the fence!

Please Read John 7:40–52 (NKJV)

Reflection

As Jesus continued to teach in the Temple during the Feast of Tabernacles, the people became deeply divided because of Him. Some declared, “This is truly the Prophet.” Others said, “This is the Christ.” Still others objected, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee?” The crowd was split over His identity.

The officers sent by the chief priests and Pharisees returned empty-handed. When asked why they had not arrested Jesus, they replied, “No man ever spoke like this Man!” Even the Temple guards were moved by His words.

The religious leaders were furious. They mocked the crowd and the officers, saying, “Are you also deceived? Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him?” They were convinced that only the ignorant and untaught could possibly follow Jesus.

Then Nicodemus — the same man who had come to Jesus by night earlier — spoke up with courage: “Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?” His question was met with scorn: “Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.”

Division because of Jesus is not new — it has existed from the very beginning of His ministry. Some see Him as the Prophet, some as the Christ, and some as a threat to their system. Jesus does not come to bring superficial unity. He comes to reveal hearts. His presence and His words always force a decision: Will we believe, or will we reject?

In the Kingdom life, we must be prepared for division. When we stand with Jesus and His Word, some will walk away, some will criticize, and some will mock. But like Nicodemus, we are called to speak truth even when it costs us favor with the crowd. True discipleship is not about pleasing men — it is about standing with the One who is the Truth, even when it creates tension.

Application

Today, ask yourself honestly: Where is Jesus causing division in my life or relationships? Is there any area where I am tempted to stay silent or compromise to avoid conflict? Renew your mind with this truth: following Jesus will sometimes divide us from the opinions of others. Choose today to stand with Him even if it means standing alone. Speak truth with love and courage when the opportunity arises. Let your quiet obedience and bold faith become a testimony that points others to the Christ who divides in order to save.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that Jesus is worth every division He causes in our lives. Thank You for the courage of Nicodemus and for every heart that chooses to stand with Your Son. Forgive us when we shrink back from division or seek the approval of men more than Your approval. Renew our minds today to follow Jesus even when it costs us. Give us grace to speak truth in love and to stand firm when others turn away. Let our lives reflect unwavering loyalty to the One who is the Christ. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Every morning during the feast, the priests had drawn water from the Pool of Siloam in a golden pitcher, carried it in joyful procession, and poured it out at the base of the altar while the people sang and prayed for rain and for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

It was at that very moment—right after the water had been poured and the hearts of the people were still stirred by the ritual—that Jesus stood and cried out with a loud voice:

“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

John immediately explains the meaning: “But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those who believe in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”

Jesus was not rejecting the beautiful ceremony. He was fulfilling it and raising it to an even higher reality. The physical water from Siloam was temporary and symbolic. Jesus declared that He Himself is the true source of living water. When we come to Him and believe, the Holy Spirit will flow out of our innermost being like rivers—continuous, life-giving, and overflowing.

In the Kingdom life, this is the promise for every believer. The Holy Spirit is not a distant influence; He is a river of living water flowing from within us. He satisfies our deepest thirst and then overflows to bless others. The ritual pointed forward; Jesus fulfilled it. The water ceremony is over, but the reality of the Spirit has come.

Application

Today, recognize any place in your life where you are spiritually thirsty. Come to Jesus and drink. Renew your mind with this truth: out of your heart will flow rivers of living water. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you afresh and to let His life flow through you today. Look for one opportunity to let that river bless someone else—perhaps a word of encouragement, an act of kindness, or simply sharing the presence of Jesus. Your yielded life can become a source of living water to those around you.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the beautiful promise of rivers of living water. Thank You that Jesus stood on the last day of the feast and invited everyone who thirsts to come to Him. Fill us afresh with Your Holy Spirit today. Let rivers of living water flow out of our innermost being, satisfying our thirst and overflowing to others. Renew our minds to live from this continual flow instead of dryness or striving. Help us come to Jesus daily and believe. May Your Spirit in us bring life, joy, and blessing everywhere we go. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.

Seeking Jesus First - April 1, 2026

“You Will Seek Me and Not Find Me”

Please Read John 7:32–36 (NKJV)

Reflection

The Pharisees and chief priests, hearing the people whispering that Jesus might be the Christ, sent officers to arrest Him. Instead of fleeing, Jesus gave them a solemn and urgent warning:

“I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I go to Him who sent Me. You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come.”

The people were confused. They speculated whether He planned to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks to teach the Gentiles. They did not understand that Jesus was speaking of His coming death, resurrection, and ascension to the Father. His time on earth in the flesh was limited. The window of grace was open — but it would not remain open forever.

This is a sobering reality. Scripture echoes the same urgency in Isaiah 55:6: “Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near.”

In the Kingdom life, there is a present moment of grace, and we must not treat it lightly. The Father is drawing, the Son is calling, the Spirit is convicting — right now. To continually delay our response is dangerous. There can come a time when we seek Him and do not find Him in the same way — not because God has become unwilling, but because our hearts have grown hard through repeated resistance.

Jesus’ words are both a serious warning and a loving invitation. While He is near, while His voice is clear, while the door of grace stands open — this is the time to seek Him, believe in Him, and come to Him with a whole heart.

Application

Today, pause and ask the Holy Spirit: “Is there any area where I have been delaying my response to You?” If He brings something to mind — a step of obedience, a needed repentance, a fresh surrender — respond to Him today. Do not wait for a more convenient time. Renew your mind with this truth: “Seek the Lord while He may be found.” Take one decisive step right now while His grace is actively drawing you. Your prompt response today can keep your heart soft and open to His voice for years to come.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the present moment of grace. Thank You that Jesus warns us not to delay seeking Him. Help us to seek You while You may be found and call upon You while You are near. Forgive us for any procrastination or hardness of heart. Soften our hearts and give us quick obedience. Renew our minds to recognize the urgency of responding to Your voice today. Draw us closer and help us come to You without hesitation. May we live with open, responsive hearts, eager to follow You in this present moment. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.

Seeking Jesus First - March 31, 2026

“Is This the Christ?”

Please Read John 7:25–31 (NKJV)

Reflection

As Jesus taught openly in the temple during the Feast of Tabernacles, the people of Jerusalem began to debate His identity. Some asked with growing expectation, “Is this not the Christ?” Others immediately objected, “We know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one will know where He is from.”

The crowd was divided. Some were ready to believe because of the signs they had seen. Others rejected Jesus based on outward appearance and human reasoning — they knew His family background and hometown, so they concluded He could not possibly be the Messiah.

Jesus responded with bold clarity: “You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know.”

True faith does not look to popular opinion, outward circumstances, or human logic for direction. True faith looks to the Word of God. The Scriptures — the Law and the Prophets — clearly pointed to Jesus as the Christ. Every promise, every prophecy, every type and shadow in the Old Testament testified that He is the Messiah the Father had sent. Those who searched the Scriptures with open hearts recognized Him.

In the Kingdom life, we are called to anchor our faith in the testimony of God’s Word rather than in human reasoning or appearance. When confusion arises or when others question, our anchor must be what Scripture declares about Jesus. Renewing our minds to the truth of God’s Word enables us to see Him clearly as the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Application

Today, take time to look to the Word of God concerning who Jesus is. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to the truth that the Scriptures point to Him as the Christ. Renew your mind with this truth: true faith looks to the Word of God for direction. Choose to declare your faith in Jesus today based on what Scripture says, not on circumstances or human opinion. Share with someone one passage from the Word that has helped you believe that Jesus is the Christ. Your testimony can strengthen another person’s faith.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word that clearly testifies that Jesus is the Christ. Thank You that true faith is anchored in Scripture rather than in outward appearance or human reasoning. Renew our minds today to see Jesus as Your Word reveals Him. Help us believe and declare with confidence that He is the promised Messiah. Give us grace to stand firm in Your truth even when others question or reject. May our lives be rooted in Your Word alone. They accused Him of breaking the law. Jesus turned the question back on them:

“Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill Me?”

He went on to expose their inconsistent judgment. They circumcised a male child on the Sabbath (a work of the law) so that the law of Moses would not be broken, yet they were enraged that He had made a man completely well on the Sabbath. “Do not judge according to appearance,” Jesus said, “but judge with righteous judgment.”

The leaders clung tightly to outward tradition while missing the heart of the law. The law was never meant to be a cold set of rules that ignored human need; it was always meant to reflect the mercy and justice of God. Jesus fulfilled the law perfectly — not by abolishing mercy, but by embodying it. Healing on the Sabbath was not breaking the law; it was fulfilling its deepest purpose.

In the Kingdom life, we are called to the same righteous judgment. Tradition and outward appearance can easily become idols. We can become so focused on “the rules” that we miss the heart of God — mercy, compassion, and restoration. Jesus challenges us to look beyond the surface and judge as the Father judges: with truth and love.

Application

Today, ask the Holy Spirit to show you any area where you may be judging by appearance or clinging to tradition instead of the heart of God. Renew your mind with Jesus’ words: “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.” Look for one opportunity today to show mercy where strict rule-keeping might be easier. Perhaps forgive quickly, extend grace to someone who has failed, or meet a practical need instead of waiting for the “right time.” Let your actions reflect the mercy of the Father who sent His Son to heal and restore.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your law and for sending Jesus who perfectly fulfilled it. Thank You that He showed us the heart of the law is mercy and love. Forgive us when we judge by outward appearance or cling to tradition instead of Your heart. Renew our minds today to judge with righteous judgment. Help us see people and situations as You see them — with compassion and truth. Let our lives reflect the mercy of Jesus, who healed on the Sabbath and calls us to do the same. In His name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. The Jews marveled, saying, “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?”

Jesus answered them and said, “My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority. He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him.”

The people were astonished at Jesus’ teaching. He had never attended the formal rabbinical schools, yet He taught with authority and depth that surpassed the scribes. Their question revealed their assumption: true teaching must come through human channels and credentials. Jesus corrected their thinking at the root.

“My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me.”

The source of Jesus’ teaching was the Father Himself. He did not speak from human wisdom or personal ambition. He spoke what He heard from the Father.

Then Jesus gave a powerful key: “If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God…”

This is a spiritual principle. The ability to discern whether teaching is from God is not primarily intellectual — it is relational and volitional. When our heart is set to do the Father’s will, our spiritual taste buds become tuned to recognize His voice. Just as our physical taste buds begin to crave the foods we feed them regularly, our spiritual taste buds begin to crave the pure Word of God when we consistently choose to obey it.

The one who speaks from himself seeks his own glory. But the one who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true. Jesus lived this perfectly — He sought only the Father’s glory. That is why His teaching carried divine authority and life.

In the Kingdom life, we are called to develop spiritual taste buds that hunger for what is truly from God. When we renew our minds by feeding on His Word and choosing to do His will, we grow in the ability to discern truth from error. We begin to crave the pure milk and strong meat of Scripture. We recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd and reject the voice of strangers.

Application

Today, examine what you are feeding your spiritual taste buds. Are you regularly consuming the Word of God, or are you filling your mind with other voices? Make a deliberate choice to do the Father’s will in one specific area today. Renew your mind with this truth: “If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God.” Spend time in Scripture, asking the Holy Spirit to sharpen your discernment. As you obey, notice how your hunger for God’s truth grows. Share with someone how feeding on God’s Word has changed what you crave spiritually — your testimony can help them develop healthy spiritual taste buds too.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that Jesus taught only what He heard from You. Thank You that when we set our hearts to do Your will, You help us discern what is truly from You. Renew our spiritual taste buds today. Forgive us for the times we have fed on things that dull our hunger for Your Word. Help us crave Your truth above all else. Give us grace to do Your will so we may know Your doctrine. Let our lives seek Your glory alone, not our own. May we grow in discernment and walk in the pure teaching that comes from You. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.

Seeking Jesus First - March 25, 2026

“Jesus and the Right Time”Please Read John 7:1–13 (NKJV)

Reflection

After the events at the Feast of Tabernacles drew near, Jesus’ brothers urged Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are

Discipleship

Faith

John

Seeking Jesus First

Clay Runnels

“Jesus and the Right Time”Please Read John 7:1–13 (NKJV)

Reflection

After the events at the Feast of Tabernacles drew near, Jesus’ brothers urged Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing. For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” Even His own brothers did not believe in Him at that time.

Jesus answered them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready… You go up to this feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, for My time has not yet fully come.”

God’s timing is very important. While some things transcend time, the Father reserves the timing of the most significant moments to Himself. Jesus lived in perfect alignment with the Father’s schedule. He would not be rushed by human pressure, even from His own family. He knew the cross had its appointed hour, and He would not step ahead of it or lag behind it.

Scripture repeatedly calls us to this same posture of trust: “Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart” (Psalm 27:14). “In due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart” (Galatians 6:9). And James 4:10 reminds us, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.”

Things are always better in God’s timing. When we try to force open doors, manipulate outcomes, or rush ahead of the Father, we often create unnecessary hardship. But when we humble ourselves, wait patiently, and rest in the Lord, He lifts us up at the right moment and in the right way. Jesus modeled this perfectly. He was never late and never early—He was always right on time with the Father.

In the Kingdom life, we are invited into the same trust. God’s timing is not arbitrary; it is perfect. Our part is to humble ourselves, wait on Him, and refuse to fret or strive. When we do, we discover that His “due season” is always worth the wait.

Application

Today, identify any area where you have been tempted to push ahead of God’s timing—perhaps a decision, a ministry opportunity, or a personal desire. Bring it to the Lord and humbly release it to Him. Renew your mind with these truths: “Wait on the Lord… in due season… humble yourselves and He will lift you up.” Choose one practical step of patience today—perhaps delay a conversation, pray instead of acting, or simply rest in His presence while you wait. Share with someone how waiting on God’s timing has proven better than rushing ahead—your testimony can encourage them to trust His schedule too.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that Jesus perfectly aligned Himself with Your timing and invites us to do the same. Thank You that Your timing is always perfect and that things are always better in Your hands. Today we humble ourselves before You. Forgive us for the times we have rushed ahead or grown impatient. Teach us to wait on You with confidence, knowing that in due season You will lift us up and bring forth Your purposes. Strengthen our hearts as we rest in You. Let our lives reflect the peace that comes from trusting Your schedule. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. The crowd had thinned. The enthusiasm had faded. The moment of decision had come.

Jesus turned to the Twelve and asked one of the most searching questions in all of Scripture: “Do you also want to go away?”

Simon Peter answered for the group with raw honesty and deep conviction: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

This is true faith in its clearest form. Peter did not fully understand everything Jesus had said, yet he knew enough to stay. He recognized that Jesus alone had the words of eternal life. There was simply nowhere else to go. No other teacher, no other system, no other person could give what Jesus gives.

Jesus’ response is sobering. He said, “Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?” He was speaking of Judas Iscariot, who would later betray Him. Even among the inner circle, not everyone truly believed. Jesus knew from the beginning who would fall away.

In the Kingdom life, moments of apostasy test every believer. When the teaching gets hard, when the crowd leaves, when following Jesus costs something, each of us must answer the same question: “Do you also want to go away?”

True faith declares with Peter, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” It is a personal, willful response amid widespread turning away. It chooses relationship with the Holy One of God over comfort, popularity, or understanding. It anchors the heart in the truth that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and there is no other place to find eternal life.

Application

Today, hear Jesus asking you personally: “Do you also want to go away?” Be honest before Him. If any area of your life is tempted to pull back because the cost feels high or the truth feels hard, bring it to Him right now. Renew your mind with Peter’s confession: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” Make a fresh declaration of your faith today. Choose to stay close to Jesus even when others walk away. Let your unwavering commitment become a testimony that strengthens someone else who is struggling to remain faithful.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus, the Holy One of God, who alone has the words of eternal life. Thank You that in moments when many turn away, we can still choose to stay. Today we answer Your question with Peter’s words: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” Strengthen our faith to remain when others leave. Renew our minds to trust You even when we do not fully understand. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret—it only causes harm. For evildoers shall be cut off; but those who wait on the Lord, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; indeed, you will look carefully for his place, but it shall be no more. But the meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.”

David wrote these words while watching the wicked prosper and scheme. The temptation to fret, grow angry, and take matters into our own hands is very real. Yet the Holy Spirit gives us a better way: Rest. Wait patiently. Cease from anger. Forsake wrath. Do not fret.

Why? Because God has already spoken the final word over the wicked: “Evildoers shall be cut off.” In just a little while, the wicked will be no more. You will look for their place, and it will not be found. Their schemes, their power, their temporary success—all of it has an expiration date set by God Himself.

Meanwhile, those who wait on the Lord shall inherit the earth. The meek — those who refuse to strive, manipulate, or take revenge — will not only survive; they will delight themselves in the abundance of peace. This is Kingdom reality. The wicked may appear to win for a season, but the meek who trust God will inherit what lasts forever.

In the Kingdom life, fretting and wrath never produce righteousness. They only cause harm to our own hearts. Resting in the Lord is an act of faith. Waiting patiently is not passive — it is active trust that says, “God sees. God judges righteously. God will cut off the wicked in His perfect time.” While we wait, we position ourselves to receive the inheritance promised to the meek: peace, abundance, and the earth itself.

Application

Today, identify any area where you have been fretting or growing angry because of the wicked or their schemes. Bring it honestly to the Lord. Choose to rest in Him and wait patiently. Renew your mind with these truths: “Evildoers shall be cut off… but those who wait on the Lord shall inherit the earth.” Replace fretting with worship and wrath with prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you walk in meekness today. Look for one opportunity to respond with peace instead of anger. Your choice to rest and wait can become a powerful testimony to others who are also tempted to fret.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are sovereign over the wicked and their schemes. Thank You that evildoers will be cut off and the meek will inherit the earth. Forgive me for the times I have fretted, grown angry, or tried to take matters into my own hands. Today I choose to rest in You and wait patiently for You. Renew my mind so I cease from anger and forsake wrath. Help me walk in meekness and delight myself in the abundance of peace You have promised. Let my life reflect trust in Your perfect timing and righteous judgment. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. He doesn’t set traps for lions—he sets them for lambs. Every snare he builds is cunningly designed to capture something weaker than itself. Every trap is placed exactly where we walk most often. And every trap is baited with something we already love… or something we’ve grown numb to.

Over thirty-five years ago, an awesome man of God named John R. Garlock stood before a room full of hungry believers at Christ for the Nations and opened his Bible to Psalm 124. He taught us truths that still echo in my spirit today. This message is not original with me—it is a living legacy from a faithful teacher who has now received his reward. I share it with you in his honor, and more importantly, in the honor of the One who breaks every snare.

The Word of the Lord

“Our soul has escaped as a bird from the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken, and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” (Psalm 124:7-8 NKJV)

Three Principles of Every Trap

The trap is built stronger than its victim.

The trap is designed to deceive.

The trap is placed in the path the victim travels most—the “trappy” place.

The trapper always studies the ways of the prey. Satan has studied yours.

Three Principles of Our Rescue

God Himself is the Rescuer, and He is stronger than any trial. “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32) Only the truth you know can set you free.

The fowler is the devil—but his snare is no match for our Deliverer.

The bird escaping is the perfect picture of freedom. God does not merely help us survive the trap—He breaks it so we fly again.

Ephesians 6:11 commands us to “put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” The Greek word for “wiles” means a well-traveled path—the exact route the enemy knows you walk every day.

Now, with the Holy Spirit as our Guide, let’s expose the seven traps.

#1 – The Trap of Trauma

It strikes without warning—like a car crash in the night, or a snake that bites while you’re simply gathering sticks for a fire (Acts 28). Paul shook it off into the fire and suffered no harm. Why? Because “He shall give His angels charge over you” (Psalm 91).

Escape: Stay under the shadow of the Almighty. Trauma wants to define you; the blood of Jesus redefines you. Speak the truth: “This did not come to stay—it came to pass.”

#2 – The Trap of Tranquility

Change so gradual you never feel the heat. The old illustration still works: the frog in the pot. Half a degree every five minutes… until it’s too late.

The Holy Spirit is the One who says, “It’s getting warm in here—time to jump!”

Escape: Cultivate sensitivity to the Spirit. What once grieved you must never become comfortable.

#3 – The Trap of Trends

Repeated exposure to the shocking until the shocking no longer shocks. Native hunters once floated pumpkins down the river until the ducks stopped flying away. Then they carved out a pumpkin, put it on their head, and simply walked up and grabbed the birds.

We are doing the same thing in our culture. What repulsed us yesterday now gets a shrug. Soon we begin to act out the very thing that once horrified us.

Escape: Renew your mind daily (Romans 12:2). Let the Word keep you shockable in the right way.

#4 – The Trap of Tradition

The processionary caterpillars followed the leader in a perfect circle around the rim of a flowerpot for seven days—until they died of exhaustion. “Everybody’s doing it… it must be okay. It’s how we’ve always done it.”

Jesus said it plainly: “You have made the word of God of no effect by your tradition” (Mark 7:13). The fear of man is a snare (Proverbs 29:25).

Escape: Follow the Spirit and the Scripture, not the crowd or the company policy. Break the circle.

#5 – The Trap of the Treadmill

You run hard, sweat much, accomplish little, and never advance. Your God-given gifts stay locked inside while you stay comfortable in the same place.

Escape: Ask the Holy Spirit one dangerous question: “Lord, am I busy… or am I fruitful?” Then be willing to step off whatever treadmill is keeping you from your next assignment.

#6 – The Trap of Treasure

Hunters in Africa tied a jar to a stake, dropped a banana inside, and waited. The monkey could reach in, but once his fist closed around the banana he could not pull it out. He would rather die than let go of his treasure.

“The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil” (1 Timothy 6:10). The lottery, the promotion, the possession—anything we refuse to release becomes our prison.

Escape: Hold everything with open hands. “Seek first the kingdom…” (Matthew 6:33) is not a suggestion—it is the key that opens the jar.

#7 – The Trap of Transgression

The ultimate snare. A little boy in Boston once carried a caged bird and poked it mercilessly with a stick. Dr. A.J. Gordon, working in his garden, stopped the boy and asked, “How much for the bird and the cage?” The boy named an outrageous price. Dr. Gordon paid it, opened the cage, and set the bird free.

That is exactly what Jesus did for you and me. We were trapped in sin, poked and tormented by the enemy. Jesus paid the ridiculous price—His own blood—and set us free.

Escape: Stay free by staying filled. “If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).

Closing Altar Call / Devotional Response

Right now, the Holy Spirit is pointing to the trap you’re in—or the one you’re drifting toward. Don’t wait until you’re boiled, circled, grabbed, or clubbed.

Say this prayer out loud with me: “Lord Jesus, You are stronger than every trap. I know the truth—You are my Rescuer. Break every snare in my life today. I refuse the Trap of Trauma, Tranquility, Trends, Tradition, Treadmill, Treasure, and Transgression. I choose freedom. Holy Spirit, make me sensitive again. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.”

Final Blessing

“Our soul has escaped… the snare is broken… and we have escaped.” Go fly, child of God. And when you do, tell someone about the man who first taught you this truth—John R. Garlock—and about the greater Man who made it possible: Jesus Christ, our Deliverer.

Seeking Jesus First - March 16, 2026

“Many Turned Away – But You?”Please Read John 6:60–66 (NKJV)

ReflectionMany of Jesus’ disciples, upon hearing the hard teaching—“Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you”

Faith

John

Discipleship

Seeking Jesus First

Clay Runnels

“Many Turned Away – But You?”Please Read John 6:60–66 (NKJV)

ReflectionMany of Jesus’ disciples, upon hearing the hard teaching—“Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you”—began to grumble. “This is a hard saying; who can understand it?” they said.

Jesus did not soften the words or chase after them with explanations. He let the truth stand and watched as many turned away and walked no more with Him. Then He turned to the Twelve and asked a piercing question: “Do you also want to go away?”

This moment exposes the heart of true commitment. Some follow Jesus only as long as it is convenient—when the teaching is comfortable, the miracles are impressive, and the crowd is enthusiastic. But when the word becomes hard, when understanding fails, when following requires faith beyond sight, many leave. They were offended at the demand for deep, intimate union with the crucified and risen Savior. They wanted bread for the stomach, not life for the soul.

Jesus does not beg or bargain. He asks because He values willing, tested faith. The righteous shall live by faith (Habakkuk 2:4; Romans 1:17). Faith is not blind optimism—it is trusting Him even when we do not fully understand, when the path seems difficult, when the crowd thins, and when the word challenges our comfort.

Peter’s answer captures the essence: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” When the crowd left, the true disciples stayed—not because they understood everything, but because they knew Who they were following. They chose commitment over convenience, relationship over retreat.

In the Kingdom life, hard truths will come. Offense will test us. The crowd may thin. The question remains the same: “Do you also want to go away?” Will we trust Him even when we don’t understand? Will we live by faith, anchored in the One who has the words of eternal life?

ApplicationToday, reflect on any “hard saying” or difficult season where you’ve been tempted to turn away or pull back. Bring it honestly to Jesus. Renew your mind: the righteous live by faith, not by sight or full understanding. Choose commitment afresh—declare like Peter, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” Take one step of trust today: obey a prompting you’ve hesitated on, rest in a promise you don’t fully grasp, or simply stay close to Him when others leave. Share with someone how you’ve chosen to stay with Jesus through a hard season—your testimony of commitment can strengthen another disciple when their faith is tested.

PrayerHeavenly Father, thank You for Jesus, who speaks hard but holy truth that tests our hearts. Thank You that He does not soften the word to keep the crowd, but invites us to real commitment. Forgive us for times we’ve grumbled, turned away, or followed only when it was convenient. Renew our minds today to live by faith—the righteous shall live by faith. Help us trust You even when we don’t understand. Anchor us in the truth that You alone have the words of eternal life. Let us be like Peter—staying close, believing, and knowing You are the Christ. Strengthen our commitment when the crowd thins. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.
