Why did God, through Moses, give Israel The Law?

And the Lord commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is this day. Then it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to observe all these commandments before the Lord our God, as He has commanded us.’” (Deuteronomy 6:24–25, NKJV)

For just a minute, stop looking at The Law as something to ignore. It is, after all, the word of God. It was given for their good, always. Ignore the curse of The Law because Christ Jesus ate it for us. “He who knew no sin became sin that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” The way that covenant was written has been overwritten by and better covenant with better promises. However, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked. For whatsoever a man may sow, that will he also reap.”

Was the law impossible to keep? No. The Law included forgiveness of sins. The Law recognized that sin dwelled within men, and it made a way for sins to be atoned for. But the fact that it was not the end all covenant is made clear in that they had to do continual sacrifices for sin and they had to renew the covenant with a big sacrifice once a year that required all males to attend and reaffirm the “swearing in” to the covenant.

Therefore, righteousness was not the result of keeping the law or making continual sacrifices.

All of that being said, the things that God told them to do were all righteous. God would never tell them to sin. God told them to do righteousness which makes the works of the law righteous works. And these righteous works were always “for our good” - “Sowing and Reaping”. God told us that when we do good, we reap good. When we give, “it shall be given to us good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over.” But the works of the flesh keep us from the fullness of God in this life and produce destruction and decay of our life in this life.

Refraining from murdering, lying, fornicating, stealing etc., is for our good. We are under no obligation to keep The Law. It was not even our covenant to begin with, and unless you are going to do animal sacrifices in Jerusalem in a non-existent temple, it is impossible now to keep The Law. It has become obsolete. However, The word of God shows us that love is the fulfillment of The Law. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength and love your neighbor as yourself. If you do these things, it is more than keeping The Law and it is more than anything an animal sacrifice could accomplish. The blood of Christ Jesus is Holy and it has been applied to The Mercy Seat before our Heavenly Father. This blood is our atonement, once for all. The Grace of God has been poured out upon all who believe in Christ Jesus and receive His Holy Spirit. And The Name of our LORD JESUS has been exalted above every other name. Now He is LORD and God and is seated at The Heavenly Father’s right hand. Worship Him, Love One Another, and Keep His Commands and you will have life and life more abundantly.
