“Whose Child Are You Really?”

Please Read John 8:37–47 (NKJV)

Reflection

Jesus looked straight at those who claimed Abraham as their father and said something that cut to the heart:

“I know that you are Abraham’s descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you… You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do.”

The religious leaders were proud of their natural lineage, but Jesus exposed the deeper reality. Spiritual fatherhood is not determined by bloodline or religious heritage. It is revealed by who we obey and what we love.

Paul echoes this truth in Romans 6 when he uses the language of slavery and servanthood: “Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves as slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey?” (Romans 6:16). Whether we realize it or not, we are always serving someone. Our daily choices reveal whose child we really are.

Abraham believed God and walked in obedience. The leaders, however, wanted to kill the very One Abraham rejoiced to see. Their rejection of truth revealed their true spiritual father. Jesus said it plainly: “He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.”

In the Kingdom life, obedience always reveals identity. We reveal our true father by how we respond to the truth. When we love the truth, welcome it, and obey it, we show that God is our Father. When we resist or reject it, we show we are listening to another voice.

This is why Jesus calls us to abide in His word. As we continue in His word, we are set free from slavery to sin and brought into the full rights of sonship. The Son makes us free indeed — free to live as beloved children who abide forever in the Father’s house.

Application

Today, ask the Holy Spirit this searching question: “Whose child am I really living like?” Renew your mind with this truth: To whom you present yourself as a slave to obey — that is whose child you are revealing yourself to be. Look at one area of your life where your actions may not be matching your confession. Choose today to obey God’s Word in that area. Let your obedience declare loudly that God is your Father. As you abide in His word, you will walk in the freedom and inheritance of a true son or daughter.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that we can know whose children we really are by how we respond to Your truth. Thank You that Jesus came to set us free from every false father and bring us into Your family as beloved sons and daughters. Search our hearts today. Forgive us for any resistance to Your Word or any time we have obeyed the wrong voice. Renew our minds and realign our hearts. Help us love the truth and obey it quickly. Let our lives clearly show that You are our Father. May our obedience reveal our true identity as Your children. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.
