“My Sheep Hear My Voice”

Please Read John 10:22–30 (NKJV)

ReflectionIt was the Feast of Dedication — Hanukkah — the Festival of Lights. The people remembered how God had delivered the temple from desecration and restored true worship. In that setting, the Jews surrounded Jesus and demanded a plain answer:

“How long do You keep us in doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

Jesus answered them with the language of the shepherd and the sheep:

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.”

This is one of the most comforting and challenging truths in the Gospel. True sheep are known by this characteristic: they hear the Shepherd’s voice and they follow Him.

The religious leaders were listening to Jesus, but they were not hearing Him. Their hearts were not attuned to His voice. They wanted a political Messiah who would fit their expectations, not the Good Shepherd who would call them into intimate relationship and obedience.

In the Kingdom life, belonging to Jesus is proven not by how loudly we declare we are Christians, but by whether we recognize and obey His voice. The Shepherd’s sheep don’t just admire Him from a distance — they listen, they respond, and they follow. This is the great mark of discipleship: a hearing heart that leads to obedient action.

Jesus gives His sheep eternal life and unbreakable security. No one can snatch them out of His hand or the Father’s hand. But that security belongs to those who hear and follow.

ApplicationToday, ask the Holy Spirit this important question: “Am I truly hearing the voice of the Shepherd, or am I only hearing noise?” Renew your mind with this truth: My sheep hear My voice and follow Me. Set aside time today to listen. Open your Bible, quiet your heart, and ask Jesus to speak. Then obey whatever He tells you — even if it’s small. Write it down if needed. The more you practice hearing and obeying His voice, the more clearly you will recognize it. Let your life become proof that you belong to the Good Shepherd.

PrayerHeavenly Father, thank You that Jesus is the Good Shepherd and we are His sheep. Thank You that He knows us by name and calls us to follow His voice. Forgive us for the times we have been slow to hear or quick to disobey. Renew our minds and tune our hearts to recognize Your voice above every other voice. Teach us to listen and to follow quickly and joyfully. Help us walk in the security of knowing that no one can snatch us from Your hand. May our lives clearly show that we belong to Jesus, the Good Shepherd. In His name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.
