“Sanctify Them by Your Truth”

Reflection
Jesus continued His prayer for the disciples:
“But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.”
Jesus does not ask the Father to remove His disciples from the world. He asks that they be kept from the evil one while remaining in it. Then He prays the central request of this section: “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.”
To sanctify means to set apart for God’s purpose. Jesus is asking that the disciples be set apart and made holy through the truth of God’s Word. Earlier in this Gospel He had said, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31–32). The same Word that brings freedom is the Word that sanctifies.
Jesus then connects their sanctification to their mission: “As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.” They are not set apart from the world in the sense of withdrawal. They are set apart for the world — sent into it with the truth that has sanctified them. Jesus Himself is the model. He sanctified Himself (set Himself apart completely to the Father’s will) so that they could be sanctified by the truth.
Application
Today, ask the Holy Spirit to show you where you need to be kept from the evil one and where you need deeper sanctification by the truth.
Renew your mind with this truth: God’s Word is the instrument of your sanctification. Abide in it. Let it set you apart for the Father’s purposes. Remember that you are not only kept — you are also sent. Live today as one who has been sanctified by the truth and sent into the world as Jesus was sent.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that Jesus prayed for us to be kept from the evil one and sanctified by Your truth. Thank You that Your Word is truth. Forgive us for the times we have neglected the Word that sanctifies us. Renew our minds today to abide in Your truth. Keep us from the evil one. Set us apart for Your purposes, and send us into the world as Jesus was sent. Let Your Word do its full work in us. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.
