Part 2: “That They All May Be One”

Please Read John 17:20–23 (NKJV)

Reflection

Jesus prayed that all who believe in Him would be one — as the Father is in Him and He is in the Father — so that we would be one in Them. This is not a unity we achieve by effort alone. It is a gift given at the new birth.

According to John 3, we are born again by faith in Jesus Christ and by receiving the Holy Spirit. At that moment the incorruptible seed of God’s life is planted in our spirit (1 Peter 1:23). Before we know how to walk in it, before we understand the fullness of our inheritance, the gift of unity with the Father and the Son is already ours. We are placed into the family of God while we are still spiritual babes.

This gift is received by faith at a time when we are still practically incapable of living it out fully. Some may argue that no believer can mature to the practical level of sonship that Jesus walked in. Yet that argument does not change the spiritual reality Jesus declared, nor does it diminish the potential of every believer. The righteousness of God is revealed “from faith to faith” (Romans 1:17). What begins as a gift continues to unfold as we keep walking by faith.

If we continue to align our lives in faith, hope, and love, we will mature in the unity that Jesus prayed for — unity with the Father, with Christ, and with His family. The seed is already in us. The gift has already been given. Growth comes as we keep receiving and living from what has already been placed within us by the Spirit.

Application

Today, remember that unity with the Father and the Son is not something you must earn. It was given to you when you were born again.

Renew your mind with this truth: The incorruptible seed is already in you. You are already in Christ, and Christ is in you. Choose to keep aligning your life in faith, hope, and love. Let the Holy Spirit mature what He has already planted. Walk today as a son or daughter who is growing into the full expression of the unity Jesus prayed for.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that Jesus prayed for us to be one with You and with Him. Thank You that this unity was given to us as a gift when we were born again by faith and by Your Spirit. Forgive us for the times we have treated this gift as something we must achieve rather than receive and grow into. Renew our minds today. Keep us walking from faith to faith, in hope and in love, so that we may mature in the unity You have already given. Let the seed You planted in us bear the fruit of true oneness with You and with Your people. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.
