What is the fear of The LORD?
We have been taught and we know Proverbs 1:7 ,“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge” and Proverbs 9:10, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”. So let’s look at how the Scripture defines the fear of The LORD.
“The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate.” (Proverbs 8:13, NKJV)
In this verse, the fear of The LORD is fine by what we hate, scorn and shun. If we fear The LORD:
- We hate evil
- We scorn pride and arrogance
- We shun the way of evil
- And we hate the perverse mouth.
We have put a focus on saying what God says and keeping His word in our mouths. In this verse we see that should be hated, scorned and shunned. Perverse words are wicked.
What makes a word wicked? It opposes the word of God. It twists the words of God. It lies against the word of God.
Remember, God’s words produce life. Therefore, perverse words do not produce life and they actually war against life. Is it any surprise that Jesus taught, “You shall give an account for every idle word in the judgement.”?
