Mustard Seed Faith

So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20, NKJV)

Focus on the fact that your faith is like a mustard seed. Jesus used “mustard seed” in His teaching multiple times. Does it make sense that they have the ability to build and connect together? DO you think the disciples recognized the connections? I think they did because we do.

Then He said, “To what shall we liken the kingdom of God? Or with what parable shall we picture it? It is like a mustard seed which, when it is sown on the ground, is smaller than all the seeds on earth; but when it is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all herbs, and shoots out large branches, so that the birds of the air may nest under its shade.”” (Mark 4:30–32, NKJV)

Mustard seed faith simply means that we plant the word of God (faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God) and expect it to grow over time. Eventually, our mustard seed faith grows like the kingdom of God grows. It is ever increasing faith. We start small with a long term objective. We want to produce the fruit of the seed we sow, but we do not expect it to grow overnight. We till the soil, we plant, we water and we tend to our garden. We pull the weeds, protect it from animals and kill the insects.

Have you ever planted a garden? Were you faithful to tend the garden in the manner that gives the best harvest? We have planted many gardens and harvested many fruit and vegetables, but we were not always as faithful over tending the garden as we could have been. As a result, we didn’t harvest as much as we could have. There were even times when we found that insects had gotten to the vegetables before we did. Sometimes there was too much rain and sometimes there was not enough.

We have avocado trees that produce more than we can eat ourselves and they do not get tended to very much except for harvesting. The two trees are huge and provide quite a lot of shade for our back yard.

The message of mustard seed faith is mani-fold: It seems insignificant at first, It is planted by speaking, It must be tended like a garden, The harvest continues season after season if it is not allowed to be destroyed.
