“Greater Works Than These He Will Do”

Please Read John 14:12–14 (NKJV)

Reflection

Jesus had just revealed that seeing Him is seeing the Father. Then He made this remarkable promise to His disciples:

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”

Jesus’ works were the direct result of His perfect unity with the Father. He only spoke what He heard the Father say and did what He saw the Father doing. Now He promises that those who believe in Him will do the works He did — and even greater works.

Why greater? Not because believers would be greater than Jesus, but because He would now work through many believers across the earth at the same time. What Jesus did in one location during His short ministry on earth, the Church empowered by the Holy Spirit would do in many places over a much longer period of time. The Gospel would spread to the nations, and the power of God would be displayed on a broader scale.

Any greater works we do will likewise be the result of our unity with Christ and the Father through the Holy Spirit. This promise is firmly rooted in faith and intimate relationship with Jesus. Asking “in My name” means asking according to His character, His will, and for the glory of the Father.

Application

Today, let this promise stir your faith. Jesus did not say “maybe” or “sometimes.” He said those who believe in Him will do the works He did — and greater.

Renew your mind with this truth: Greater works flow from unity with Christ and the Father through the Holy Spirit. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you where He wants to work through you — in your family, your church, your workplace, or your community. Step out in faith and ask boldly in Jesus’ name, not for your own glory, but so the Father may be glorified. What greater work might Jesus want to do through your life as you abide in Him?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the amazing promise Jesus gave us. Thank You that because He went to You, we can do the works He did and even greater works through faith in His name. Forgive us for the times our faith has been small and we have expected little. Renew our minds today to believe Your Word. Draw us into deeper unity with Jesus and with You through the Holy Spirit. Stir up bold faith in us to ask in Jesus’ name and to expect greater works. Use our lives to bring glory to Your name as we walk in the power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.
