What did God say?
If you don’t care what God said, you won’t hear what God says.
Once again, if you don’t care what God has already said, how can you expect to hear what He is currently saying?
Let’s use the metaphor of a house to build an understanding about hearing God’s word.
There is a cornerstone. The foundation is aligned and leveled in accordance with the cornerstone. The first walls are aligned and leveled in accordance with the cornerstone. The measuring instruments are uniform. The remaining walls are aligned and connected to the first walls. The roof and the inner walls are all aligned and connected to these external walls. The whole house is built according to the placement and strength of the cornerstone. Ignoring the alignments and connections will result in a house that must constantly be rebuilt.
Our cornerstone is Jesus Christ. His words are the words of God and are our measuring instruments as well as our building materials. If we want to hear what God is saying, we must hear what He has said. Ignoring the cornerstone and foundation will result in mis-hearing His word. Read the following often quoted Scripture:
“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.” (2 Corinthians 10:3–6, NKJV)
Strongholds are beliefs and Arguments are words based upon those beliefs. We are to cast down beliefs and words that exalt themselves against God. If it is not aligned with what we know is God’s word, it is a mis-belief built upon mis-hearing.
“Obedience” comes from the root word which means hearing. Obedience is based upon hearing rightly. “Rightly dividing the word of truth…”. “Disobedience” is action that is based upon hearing incorrectly, or listening to the wrong words, or believing something that is incorrect. We are to hear correctly and exercise vengeance on those things we heard incorrectly. We eliminate false doctrine like this and we grow stronger in our ability to hear God in the present.
