“When Adversity Comes, Remember What I Told You”

Reflection
Jesus continued preparing His disciples for the difficult days ahead with these sober words:
“These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble. They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.”
Jesus did not want His disciples to be caught off guard or shaken when persecution came. He warned them that the hatred of the world would intensify after His departure. Some would even believe they were serving God by opposing and harming the followers of Jesus.
The root of this opposition was spiritual blindness: they did not know the Father or the Son. Jesus spoke these things in advance so that when the hard times arrived, His disciples would remember His words and not stumble in their faith.
In the Kingdom life, Jesus still prepares us for opposition. He does not promise an easy path, but He does promise that His words will steady us when difficulty comes. Many people face frustration, anxiety, or even fear because of their current circumstances. In those moments, we must return to the Scriptures God has given us. God has declared the end from the beginning. No matter what we are going through, there is a promise in His Word that will help us make it through. Knowing what He has already spoken helps us stand firm when the pressure arrives.
Application
Today, ask the Lord to strengthen your heart against the fear of rejection or opposition. Have you ever been tempted to pull back from openly following Jesus because of what others might think or do?
Renew your mind with this truth: Jesus told us these things in advance so that we would not stumble. Choose today to stand firm in your witness, even if it costs you acceptance or comfort. Ask the Holy Spirit for courage to remain faithful when the world’s opposition shows up in your life. When anxiety or fear rises, go back to the promises of God and let them steady your heart.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that Jesus prepared His disciples—and us—for the opposition that would come. Thank You that He does not leave us unprepared or surprised. Forgive us for the times we have shrunk back because of fear of rejection or persecution. Renew our minds today to remember His words and stand firm. Strengthen us by Your Holy Spirit so that we will not stumble when difficulty comes. Help us to return to Your promises whenever anxiety or fear rises. Keep us faithful witnesses of Jesus, no matter the cost. In His name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.
