“Ask, and You Will Receive”

Reflection
Jesus continued preparing His disciples for the new way of relating to the Father after His departure:
“And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.”
A major shift was about to take place. While Jesus was with them, the disciples naturally brought their requests to Him. After His return to the Father, they would pray directly to the Father in Jesus’ name. This was not a lesser access — it was a greater one. Through the finished work of the cross and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, believers would now approach the Father with the full authority of the Son.
Jesus explained the foundation of this new access:
“In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God.”
The Father’s love is the reason we can come boldly. We do not approach a reluctant God who needs to be persuaded. We come to a Father who already loves us. His love reaches us because we love His Son and believe in Him. Asking in Jesus’ name is not a formula we add to the end of a prayer — it is praying from our place of union with Christ, drawing upon what He has already secured.
Application
Today, examine how you approach the Father in prayer. Do you still feel you must somehow convince Him to listen, or do you come with confidence because of Jesus?
Renew your mind with this truth: The Father Himself loves you. Ask in Jesus’ name — not as a beggar, but as a son or daughter who has been given full access. Bring one specific request to the Father today, and ask from your place in Christ. Expect to receive, that your joy may be full.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that through Jesus we can come directly to You. Thank You that You Yourself love us because we love Your Son and believe in Him. Forgive us for the times we have approached You with uncertainty or as if we needed to earn Your attention. Renew our minds today to ask in Jesus’ name with confidence. Help us to pray from our place of union with Christ and to receive what You have already provided. Let our joy be made full. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.
