“Father, Glorify Your Son”

Reflection
Jesus had just finished saying to His disciples, “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” Then, without pause, He lifted His eyes to heaven and began to pray:
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You…”
The chapter break is artificial. In the continuous flow of the Gospel, Jesus moves directly from speaking of tribulation and overcoming to speaking of glory. The path to the glory He shared with the Father before the world began ran straight through the tribulation of the cross. He did not go around it. He went through it.
Jesus asks to be glorified so that the Father may be glorified. He speaks of the authority given to Him to give eternal life, and He defines that life clearly: “that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” Then He declares, “I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.” Even before the cross is complete, He speaks from the place of finished obedience.
Hebrews 10:36 captures the same order: “For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise.” Jesus lived this out. He endured. He did the will of God. And after He finished the work, He entered into the glory that was His from before the foundation of the world.
Application
Today, consider the order Jesus modeled. Glory comes after doing the will of God, not instead of it.
Renew your mind with this truth: The path to the promise often runs through tribulation. Jesus overcame by enduring and finishing the work the Father gave Him. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you where you need endurance right now. Choose to keep doing the will of God, trusting that the same Jesus who walked through the cross into glory is with you and will bring you through.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that Jesus moved from declaring His victory over the world straight into prayer for glory. Thank You that He did not avoid the tribulation of the cross but walked through it in obedience. Thank You that after He finished the work, He entered into the glory He shared with You before the world was. Forgive us for wanting the promise without the endurance. Renew our minds today to follow Jesus’ example. Give us the endurance we need to do Your will, and let us receive what You have promised. Glorify Your Son in our lives. In His name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.
