Is sin connected to bad things happening?

Jesus taught that sin is connected to bad things happening to us.

Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”” (John 5:14, NKJV)

It seems that our LORD Jesus wants us to live our life apart from sin and this statement gives us insight into why.

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.” (Galatians 6:7–8, NKJV)

Jesus has gone to the effort to deliver us from sin and to forgive us for sin. He has made it possible for us to have a nature that is free from sin. Christ Jesus did these things to give us a life that is free from the penalty of sin by giving us victory over sin. 1 John speaks a lot of sin and categorizes it as not believing in Christ Jesus and not walking in love. However, Galatians 5 speaks of the “works of the flesh”, and Galatians 6 tells us that the works of the flesh use the flesh to destroy the person, “of the flesh reap destruction” or decay.

In Matthew 12:43-45, Jesus said that when an evil spirit is gone out of a person, it will try to come back and make things worse, so we are admonished to not leave the house empty or return to the works of the flesh. When we do, we open ourselves up to something worse.

Jesus has given us all authority over ourselves to end our practice of the works of the flesh. He has given us His word to declare with our own mouths. He as given us His Holy Spirit with His divine nature. We have  the privilege of faith to put in the effort of studying, meditating, believing, speaking and doing His word - which is His will.
