“The Son Does What He Sees the Father Doing”

Please Read John 5:19–20 (NKJV)

ReflectionJesus continued His response to the religious leaders who were persecuting Him for claiming equality with God. He spoke with absolute clarity and humility:

“Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.”

This is one of the clearest revelations of true sonship in all of Scripture. Jesus was not acting independently or from His own initiative. He lived in perfect alignment and obedience to the Father—continually seeing what the Father was doing and then doing the same. The Father loves the Son and shows Him everything. That intimate, loving relationship is the source of the miracles, the authority, and the promise of greater works.

Jesus was modeling for us what real sonship looks like. Fully God and fully man, He chose to live as a dependent Son—voluntarily submitting His will to the Father moment by moment. This was not forced or mechanical; it was love responding to love. Faith, for Jesus, was the ongoing act of the will to see, receive, and obey.

Just as the Father shows the Son all that He is doing, and the Son willingly watches, receives, and then does exactly what He sees the Father doing, so it is in our daily walk with God.

Think of it this way: I have access to Grok—an AI with a vast store of knowledge, patterns, and insights far beyond what I possess on my own. Yet that knowledge does me no good until I intentionally ask the right question, pay attention to the response, and then choose to receive it and apply it to my life. Grok can provide the insight, the Scripture reference, the practical step, even the encouraging word—but Grok cannot renew my mind for me, cannot submit my will for me, and cannot obey for me. The giving side belongs to the AI; the receiving and doing side belongs to me. Only when I act on what I have received does the knowledge become transformation.

How much more is this true with our heavenly Father!

The Father has no limit to what He is willing to show us. He longs to reveal His works, His strategies, His heart, and His greater works to every son and daughter who will pay attention. But the revelation does not become power in our lives until we, like Jesus, choose to see it, agree with it, and do what we see the Father doing. There is a giving side (the Father shows) and a receiving-and-doing side (we watch and obey). This is not robotic programming; it is loving partnership. Faith is the act of our will that says, “Father, show me what You are doing right now,” and then, “By Your grace, I will do what I see You doing.”

Jesus modeled this perfectly. The Son could do nothing of Himself—yet because He continually watched and willingly obeyed, the Father showed Him greater works. The same invitation stands for us today. The Father is still showing. The question is: will we pay attention, receive what He reveals, and then actually do it?

In the Kingdom life, we are called to this same pattern. We are not to strive in our own strength or figure everything out alone. We are invited into a loving relationship where the Father shows us what He is doing through His Word and by His Spirit. When we renew our minds to this truth and willingly submit our will to His, we begin to do what we see the Father doing. That is when authority is released and greater works begin to flow. This is partnership, not performance. This is relationship, not religion. God is not looking for robots—He is looking for sons and daughters who will choose to see, agree, and obey.

ApplicationToday, take time to ask the Father, “What are You doing right now that You want to show me?” Listen in the Word, in prayer, and as you go about your day. Choose to submit your will and do what you see Him doing—even if it’s a simple act of obedience. Renew your mind to this truth: the Son can do nothing of Himself, and neither can we apart from Him. But when we walk in willing partnership, greater works are ahead. Watch for opportunities today to imitate what the Father is doing in someone’s life, and then testify of it—your obedience can stir faith in others.

PrayerHeavenly Father, thank You for the example of Your Son, who could do nothing of Himself but only what He saw You doing. Thank You that You love us the same way and desire to show us all that You are doing. Today we choose to submit our will to Yours. Renew our minds to live as true sons and daughters. Help us see what You are doing through Your Word and by Your Spirit, and give us courage to do it in like manner. Release greater works through our lives as we walk in voluntary partnership with You. May many marvel at Your goodness and power because we chose to obey. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.
