“Do Not Work for Food That Perishes”Please Read John 6:22–27 (NKJV)

ReflectionThe next day the crowd that had remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone. Other boats came from Tiberias near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks. When the people saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?”

Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”

The crowd tracked Jesus down—not out of awe at the miracle, but because their stomachs were still remembering the free bread. They wanted more of the same: temporary satisfaction, physical provision, another meal on demand. Jesus saw their motive clearly and redirected them with gentle but firm truth: “Do not labor for the food which perishes.”

Earthly bread fills for a day; it perishes. It satisfies the body but leaves the soul empty. The true food—the food that endures to everlasting life—is the life the Son of Man gives. This food is not earned by human effort or religious striving; it is received by faith. God the Father has set His seal on Jesus, marking Him as the source of eternal life. The work God requires is not more labor for perishing things—it is to believe in the One He sent.

In the Kingdom life, we must renew our minds to shift our pursuit. We so easily chase what perishes—money, approval, comfort, success, even religious performance—while neglecting the eternal. Jesus invites us to labor differently: to seek first the kingdom and His righteousness, to hunger for the true Bread from heaven, to believe and receive the life only He gives. When we do, earthly provision finds its proper place—secondary to the eternal food that satisfies forever.

ApplicationToday, examine what you are laboring for. Are you chasing food that perishes—things that fill for a moment but leave you empty? Bring those pursuits to Jesus and ask Him to redirect your hunger. Renew your mind: the work of God is to believe in the One He sent. Choose one intentional act today—spend time in His Word to feed on the Bread of Life, thank Him for eternal life already given, or release a perishing pursuit into His hands. Share with someone how shifting your labor to eternal things brought fresh satisfaction—your testimony can help them seek the food that endures.

PrayerHeavenly Father, thank You that Jesus is the true Bread from heaven, the food that endures to everlasting life. Thank You that You have set Your seal on Him and invite us to receive life through faith. Forgive us for laboring so hard for things that perish while neglecting what truly satisfies. Renew our minds today—shift our hunger from the temporary to the eternal. Help us seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness. Let us labor in belief, receiving the life the Son of Man gives. Satisfy us with Yourself, and let that satisfaction overflow to others. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.
