“Many Turned Away – But You?”Please Read John 6:60–66 (NKJV)

ReflectionMany of Jesus’ disciples, upon hearing the hard teaching—“Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you”—began to grumble. “This is a hard saying; who can understand it?” they said.

Jesus did not soften the words or chase after them with explanations. He let the truth stand and watched as many turned away and walked no more with Him. Then He turned to the Twelve and asked a piercing question: “Do you also want to go away?”

This moment exposes the heart of true commitment. Some follow Jesus only as long as it is convenient—when the teaching is comfortable, the miracles are impressive, and the crowd is enthusiastic. But when the word becomes hard, when understanding fails, when following requires faith beyond sight, many leave. They were offended at the demand for deep, intimate union with the crucified and risen Savior. They wanted bread for the stomach, not life for the soul.

Jesus does not beg or bargain. He asks because He values willing, tested faith. The righteous shall live by faith (Habakkuk 2:4; Romans 1:17). Faith is not blind optimism—it is trusting Him even when we do not fully understand, when the path seems difficult, when the crowd thins, and when the word challenges our comfort.

Peter’s answer captures the essence: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” When the crowd left, the true disciples stayed—not because they understood everything, but because they knew Who they were following. They chose commitment over convenience, relationship over retreat.

In the Kingdom life, hard truths will come. Offense will test us. The crowd may thin. The question remains the same: “Do you also want to go away?” Will we trust Him even when we don’t understand? Will we live by faith, anchored in the One who has the words of eternal life?

ApplicationToday, reflect on any “hard saying” or difficult season where you’ve been tempted to turn away or pull back. Bring it honestly to Jesus. Renew your mind: the righteous live by faith, not by sight or full understanding. Choose commitment afresh—declare like Peter, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” Take one step of trust today: obey a prompting you’ve hesitated on, rest in a promise you don’t fully grasp, or simply stay close to Him when others leave. Share with someone how you’ve chosen to stay with Jesus through a hard season—your testimony of commitment can strengthen another disciple when their faith is tested.

PrayerHeavenly Father, thank You for Jesus, who speaks hard but holy truth that tests our hearts. Thank You that He does not soften the word to keep the crowd, but invites us to real commitment. Forgive us for times we’ve grumbled, turned away, or followed only when it was convenient. Renew our minds today to live by faith—the righteous shall live by faith. Help us trust You even when we don’t understand. Anchor us in the truth that You alone have the words of eternal life. Let us be like Peter—staying close, believing, and knowing You are the Christ. Strengthen our commitment when the crowd thins. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.
