“This Sickness Is Not Unto Death”
Please Read John 11:8–16 (NKJV)
Reflection
When Jesus received the urgent message from Mary and Martha — “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick” — He did not rush to Bethany. Instead, He stayed where He was for two more days.
This was not indifference. It was intentional. Jesus told His disciples:
“This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”
The disciples were confused and afraid. They knew the religious leaders in Judea wanted to stone Jesus. Going back seemed like walking into danger. But Jesus was not operating on human timing or human fear. He was operating on the Father’s timetable for a much greater purpose.
What looked like delay to everyone else was actually divine strategy. Lazarus would die. The grief would be deep. The situation would appear hopeless. But it was all setting the stage for one of the greatest displays of God’s glory in the Gospels — the resurrection of a man who had been dead four days.
In the Kingdom life, we must learn to trust God’s timing, especially in seasons of delay and suffering. What feels like silence or postponement is often God preparing something far greater than we could ask or imagine. Our pain, our waiting, and even our losses are not wasted. They can become the very platform where the glory of God is revealed in a powerful way.
Jesus was not late. He was right on time — His time.
Application
Today, bring before the Lord any area where you are experiencing delay, disappointment, or seeming unanswered prayer. Renew your mind with this truth: This sickness (this struggle, this waiting, this loss) is not unto death, but for the glory of God. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you shift your focus from the pain of the delay to the purpose behind it. Choose to declare in faith today: “Lord, I believe this is for Your glory.” Then rest in His perfect timing and continue trusting Him even when you cannot see what He is doing.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that Jesus never acts randomly or too late. Thank You that even His delays are filled with purpose and love. Forgive us when we become impatient or fearful during seasons of waiting. Renew our minds today to believe that our difficulties are not unto death, but for the glory of God. Help us trust Your perfect timing. Strengthen our faith to declare, even in the dark, that You will be glorified. We surrender our timelines to You and choose to wait with hope and expectation. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.
