“Can a man take fire to his bosom, And his clothes not be burned?” Prov. 6:27
This passage speaks of sexual sins and how they will bring destruction to your soul and to your life. The wisdom of Solomon makes it very clear that we are destroying ourselves in the same manner as lighting yourself on fire.
However, The word speaks of another kind of fire that comes upon us when we receive His Holy Spirit. “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (Matthew 3:11, NKJV) Can we receive the fire of God in our bosom and not be burned by it?
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:1–2, NKJV)
When we receive the Holy Spirit and the fire of God, we present our bodies as a living sacrifice to God. We put our bodies, the lust of the flesh, on the altar, and we allow God’s Holy Spirit and fire to consume it every day. This is what makes us a living sacrifice. A living sacrifice chooses to be upon the altar - chooses to allow the fire of God to consume what can be consumed. We don’t get up when the fire is too hot. We trust God to use the fire according to His purpose. And we use the fire according to His purpose too.
“that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:22–24, NKJV)
Heavenly Father, I submit to You. I put off the old man and his lusts. Holy Spirit, burn them up today. Lead me in Your love, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
