The prophecy of the angel in Daniel Chapter 9
The angel in Daniel 9 said that this prophecy is for Jerusalem and the Jewish people. He said it would be complete in “70 weeks”. This is broadly understood as 70 weeks of years - or 490 years. It was supposed to start counting when a decree went forth to rebuild Jerusalem. The prophecy marks periods within the 70 weeks when certain things should be complete or happen. However, pay close attention to the things that must be accomplished by the end of the 70 weeks.
Daniel 9:24 Seventy Weeks - For Jerusalem and the Jewish people
- To finish the transgression
- To make an end of sins
- To make reconciliation for iniquity
- To bring in everlasting righteousness
- To seal up vision and prophecy
- And to anoint the Most Holy
- To finish the transgression: In Gen. 15:16, God told Moses that Israel was stay in Egypt until the iniquity of the Amorites was complete. This part seems to show that the tribes of Israel would be given this 490 years to finish the transgression. In Matthew 18:21, Jesus speaks of the seventy times seven in the framework of forgiveness and settling accounts with an unjust servant. “Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.”
- To make an end of sins: “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21, NKJV) “whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,” (Romans 3:25, NKJV)
- To make reconciliation for iniquity: “And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.” (Romans 5:11, NKJV)
- To bring in everlasting righteousness: “Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, And Your law is truth.” (Psalm 119:142, NKJV) “But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;” (Romans 3:21–22, NKJV)
- To seal up vision and prophecy: First, In Daniel 12:4, God tells Daniel to seal up the words of these prophecies. God and Daniel sealed up the vision and the prophecy until it was to be revealed. With that in mind, we look at another possibility. Hebrew language uses the same word for the positive and negative. Inherit is also disinherit. Possess is also dispossess. Seal could also be unseal as the meanings of the words are revealed. Jesus began unsealing these prophetic words when He spoke of the end of the age and the seventy times seven. Lastly, we complete a list when we check off everything on the list. When it is complete, we put our seal of approval that we have witnessed that it is complete.
- And to anoint the Most Holy.: Other translations say, “anoint the Holy of Holies”. Jesus was the anointed, the messiah, the christ and when He went to The Father He gave us His Holy Spirit and made us the anointed temple of God and the indwelling Holy Spirit. “When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”” (Matthew 3:16–17, NKJV) “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16, NKJV) “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?” (1 Corinthians 6:19, NKJV)
We can confidently make the statement that all of these things in Daniel 9:24 was completed in the 490 years following the decree to rebuild Jerusalem.
One might ask, what about Daniel 9:26-27?
The abomination or war of desolations that destroyed the temple and the city of Jerusalem. It happened just as Jesus decreed it would in Matthew 23:38 and Matthew 24:2. Immediately after this decree, the disciples asked when would the desolation come? Jesus told them the signs and the gave them a timeline. In Matthew 23:36 and in Matthew 24:34, Jesus said, All of these things shall come upon this generation. Within 40 years of these declarations, Jerusalem and the temple were utterly destroyed by Rome. This was the end of the temple, the Levitical priesthood and the end of sacrificing animals for sin, making the old covenant obsolete.
These Daniel prophecies and Jesus prophecies were fulfilled.
The end of the age spoken of by Jesus came with the end of the old covenant and the beginning of the new covenant, through Jesus the Christ, who died on the cross for the sins of the world and rose again victorious from the dead. He then ascended to heaven and placed His atoning blood on the mercy seat in heaven. Then he returned to earth and taught His disciples for forty days about the kingdom of God. The He ascended again to heaven with a couple of angels after telling them to tarry in Jerusalem for the gift of The Holy Spirit, who is the manifestation of Christ in them and with them, making them the Body of Christ in the earth - which body we are who have His Holy Spirit. Acts 4:12 declares that there is no other name but The LORD Jesus by which we must be saved.
