What does it mean that “Life and death are in the power of the tongue.”?
The Hebrew word for “word” is the same as the Hebrew word for “thing” - ‘dabar’
In fact, ‘dabar’ is also translated cause, command, conclusion, decree, deed, edict, matter, plan, promise, purpose, something, speak, speech, thing, verdict, and word, among others. The top three Old Testament translations for ‘dabar’: “matter” over 40x, “thing” over 100x, and “word” over 800x. The others are mostly variations of these words.
Matter is the building blocks of things. Words are concrete. They can build up or tear down. Words are real. We create as we speak. Just as God created the world and framed the ages with His Words, we imitators of God as dear children, do the same. The most important thing you can do with your mouth is agree with God.
