What’s in your well? Why would we minimize the importance of the words that we speak? The Bible never minimized their importance. The Bible never said that words are insignificant. The Bible tells us to avoid foolish jesting. “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.” (Ephesians 4:31, NKJV)  The Bible says to put away lying and speak truth. You can’t find a Scripture that supports saying whatever comes to mind except in the context of relying on Holy Spirit for what to say.

The fruit of peace is sown in peace. The fruit of the spirit are planted with words and deeds. We grow by speaking the loving truth. We grow when we put away childish speaking and childish understanding.

Our words are important. Our words frame our world. God has allowed each of us to become the prophet of our own lives. The most important story you will ever hear is the one you tell yourself. Our words are important.

A child speaks whatever comes to mind, but a mature person controls his tongue. James 3:18 tells us that people cannot tame the tongue. This applies to people who do not have Holy Spirit flooding their hearts with the love of God. We know it does not apply to a spiritually mature Christ follower because we can do all things through Christ’s strength in us. All things are possible to Him who believes and God never tells us to do something that He does not empower us to do.

Don’t walk in condemnation, but walk in the power of God to change. Give your mouth plenty of good things to say by imitating your Heavenly Father. Renew your mind and practice God’s presence and language.
