Christ Jesus gave us a new and better covenant that grants salvation through faith in Him and His words. When He gave it, He removed the need for an old one. The old one faded from glory and the new covenant is ever increasing in glory.
“Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”” (John 6:67–69, NKJV)
If we want eternal life, we go to the one who has it. The Law of Moses did not promise eternal life and did not carry the words of eternal life. Jesus Christ brought us the words of eternal life.
When Scripture says, “Life and death are in the power of the tongue…”, it was speaking of physical life and death. When Peter talked about Jesus having the words of eternal life, he was speaking of a life that takes place after physical life and death. Bot passages are correct. Individuals have the ability through their own words to curse or to bless their own physical life. However, only the words of Christ Jesus produce the river of life that flows from the throne of God right into us.
Kings make decrees from their thrones. The throne is a symbol of authority and power. It can be stated that the river of life flowing from the throne of God is created by the words of His mouth. ““But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’ ”” (Luke 4:4, NKJV) The words of God grant life. The words of Jesus grant eternal life. We have a better covenant with better promises because God and Jesus have spoken it and we have received it by and with His Holy Spirit.
