Conscience - Part Five
1 Corinthians 10:29–31 (NKJV): “Conscience,” I say, not your own, but that of the other. For why is my liberty judged by another man’s conscience? But if I partake with thanks, why am I evil spoken of for the food over which I give thanks? Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
We are not judged by the conscience of others, but neither should we try to offend the conscience of others if we are aware and we can help it.
Apostle Paul tells us to do all with the consideration of our own conscience being good towards God. We’ve previously emphasized the correlation between living by faith and having a pure and good conscience. But let us also look at how being compassionate and loving towards others impacts our conscience and our faith.
As we are considerate of others and their sensibilities, we demonstrate the love of God for them. It is not appropriate for a free person to condemn someone who is not as free, but as we would accommodate beloved family members, we accommodate each other in love. This is not to say that we compromise our own conscience in accommodating them, but we honor and value each other enough to be kind and considerate of each other. This is not about “right and wrong” or “the knowledge of good and evil”. It is about being one living family in Christ. Sometimes, we try to instruct each other without relationship or permission, and “people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” Let God be the one who judges. It is, after all, His responsibility and not ours.
