What is fellowship? Is it hanging out in a brotherly way with each other? Is it eating a meal or sharing a scripture? The heart of the word fellowship is unity and partnership. People who fellowship focus on how they are one and not on how they are different. Fellowship is a partnering of life. A marriage is a fellowship. In a fellowship, there is shared burdens, shared persecutions, shared pains, shared joy, shared faith, shared victory and shared resources.
“that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.” (1 John 1:3–4, NKJV)
As we read here, the apostles shared the good news with everyone. They gave away what Christ Jesus gave to them. This created a fellowship in the gospel of Christ Jesus. We all become one - one family, one faith, one baptism, with One Spirit and with One God who is Father of us all. Our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ; and this gives us cause for great overflowing joy.
John goes on to declare to us that our love for one another is our proof that we love God and believe in His Son Jesus Christ. According to John’s writing, which is breathed on by Holy Spirit, to not love is to sin and to walk in darkness apart from God. If we are “crucifying the flesh” over anything, let us do it over that which is not love manifesting in us. Manifesting the love of God is the purest form of fellowship with Our Father.
