Part Nine - God’s words in our mouths
If it is not God’s word, we do not need it in our mouth. “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” (Philippians 4:8, NKJV)
The Scripture warns what will happen to those who speak evil. Don’t the righteous pray that the wicked would be destroyed or removed from their place of authority, wealth, influence and power? How do we tell the difference between the evil and the righteous? God looks at the heart and judges men according to their works (Luke 16:15, Matthew 16:27). Our calling is not based upon our works, however, so many Scriptures tell us that our rewards are “according to our works” (Rom. 2:6).
“Why do you boast in evil, O mighty man? The goodness of God endures continually. Your tongue devises destruction, Like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. You love evil more than good, Lying rather than speaking righteousness. Selah You love all devouring words, You deceitful tongue. God shall likewise destroy you forever; He shall take you away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place, And uproot you from the land of the living. Selah” (Psalm 52:1–5, NKJV)
“Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” (Matt. 12:34) A person will reveal his own wickedness in how he speaks. He may try to hide it in public, but those who know him will hear what is inside. Wicked speech reveals wicked desires. Wicked desires lead to wicked actions. Wicked actions lead to death.
Thank God for merciful forgiveness and for His Spirit and Word which changes our hearts and renews our minds. Thank God for a brand new heart filled with His love by the overflow of His Spirit within us.
