“That You May Believe”

Please Read John 20:30–31 (NKJV)

Reflection

And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

John has just recorded the empty tomb, the appearance to Mary, the locked-room encounter, the breathing of the Spirit, and Thomas’s confession. Then he pauses to tell us why he wrote at all. He did not try to record every sign Jesus did. He selected these signs for a clear purpose: that you may believe.

The goal is not mere information. It is living faith. John wants us to believe two things that cannot be separated:

  • that Jesus is the Christ — the Anointed One promised by the Scriptures,
  • and that He is the Son of God.

Then he adds the result: that believing you may have life in His name. These written testimonies are given to inspire faith in God through His Son. They show us the heart of Jesus — He did these signs because of His love and compassion for the people He encountered. That compassion has not ended. As we hear the Word and the Spirit breathes upon it, faith rises. Believing, we receive life in His name, and the kingdom of God opens to us. Jesus is the door into the family of God.

Application

Today, come to this good news with the purpose John intended. These things were written so that you may believe.

Renew your mind with this truth: Faith in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, is the door into life. The Scriptures are living testimony meant to awaken faith — not to replace encounter with God, but to lead us into it. Hear the Word. Believe. Receive life in His name. Let your confession be as clear as Thomas’s — and as full of life as John intended.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that these signs were written so that we may believe. Thank You that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that in His name we have life. Breathe upon Your Word today. Strengthen our faith. We believe, and we receive life in His name. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.
