A deaf ear does not hear the words plainly spoken aloud by even those who are very near. A deaf person, however, will sense the presence of someone even without hearing them. So there is something developed inside them that “hears”. People sometimes close their hearing off to things which they find offensive or intrusive. Ex: A person who lives near a railroad tracks stops “hearing” the train as it passes.
