“If You Love Me, Keep My Commandments”
Please Read John 14:15–24 (NKJV)
Reflection
Jesus had just promised His disciples that they would do greater works and that He would answer their prayers in His name. Then He gave them this clear and intimate connection between love and obedience:
“If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever — the Spirit of truth…”
The Apostle John later summarized the commandments Jesus was referring to:
“And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.” (1 John 3:23)
This does not do away with the moral laws of Scripture. Instead, it brings them to their fullest expression. When we believe in Jesus and love one another as He loved us, we align our hearts with the Father’s heart for us and for others. This love does not cancel righteousness — it fulfills it from the inside out. God’s love written in our hearts by the Holy Spirit empowers us to walk in obedience that is genuine and life-giving.
Jesus promised that if we love Him by keeping His commandments, He would send the Holy Spirit to live in us and be with us forever. The Helper would teach us, remind us of Jesus’ words, and empower us to live the life Jesus called us to live. As the Apostle Paul wrote, “the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:5).
Application
Today, bring your heart before the Lord and ask: Am I truly loving Jesus by believing in Him fully and loving others as He has loved me?
Renew your mind with this truth: Obedience flows from love, and love aligns us with God’s heart. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you one specific way you can demonstrate your love for Jesus today — whether through deeper trust in Him or through practical love toward someone else. Let your obedience be the fruit of love, not mere duty, as the Holy Spirit empowers you from within.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the clear words of Jesus: “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” Thank You that Your commandment is that we believe in Jesus and love one another. Forgive us for the times we have reduced obedience to cold duty instead of the fruit of love. Renew our minds today to understand that loving You means aligning our hearts with Yours. Fill us afresh with the Holy Spirit and empower us to believe in Jesus and to love others as He has loved us. May our lives reflect genuine love in both word and deed. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.
