How does God (Elohim) answer the question, “What is your name?”
“LORD” or “YHWH” or “Adonai” or “Hashem” were all words substituted in Hebrew and English for “I AM that I AM”.
“Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?” And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’” (Exodus 3:13–15, NKJV)
The I AM answers like He did to Manoah, father of Samson, “my name is to incomprehensible or wonderful for you.”
The I AM answers, “Get to know me and find out.”
“I will encounter you in the way that you need me to, and, during that time, you can call me that.”
“When you seek me, you will find me.”
“Whoever comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarded of those who diligently seek Him.”
The I AM revealed Himself to Israel in many ways. Think simply about all of the compound names of Jehovah - Tsidkenu (Righteousness), M’kaddish (Sanctification- “Makes Holy”), Shalom (Peace and Wholeness), Jireh (Provider), Rapha (Healer). Do a search on all of the Hebrew names for YHWH and you will see that God never pigeon-holed Himself with one name. He tells us to seek The I AM and find out for ourselves who He is through encounter and experience. Knowing God is all about relationship and spiritual intimacy. Go ahead; seek Him and find out who He is. It will be the next most rewarding experience you have ever had.
