“It Is Finished”

Please Read John 19:17–30 (NKJV)

Reflection

And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was:

JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.”’” Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.

After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

The cry “It is finished” is the Greek word tetelestai — it is completed, it has been brought to its intended end, it is paid in full. The work of redemption was not left incomplete. Every requirement was met. Every Scripture that had to be fulfilled was fulfilled. The debt was paid.

Some have also observed a beautiful Hebrew word association in which the root that speaks of completion is related to the word for bride. In that light, the finished work of the cross is also the securing of the bride. The death of Christ brought the reality of the Bride into fulfillment.

Even in His final hours, Jesus cared for His mother, fulfilled Scripture, and completed the work the Father had given Him to do. The King who was lifted up on the cross finished what He came to accomplish.

Application

Today, rest in the finished work of Jesus. Nothing remains for you to add to what He has already completed.

Renew your mind with this truth: The cry “It is finished” means the work of salvation is complete. You do not strive to finish what Christ has already finished. Receive it by faith. Live from the place of a finished work — forgiven, cleansed, and secured as part of His Bride.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that Jesus finished the work of redemption on the cross. Thank You that tetelestai still stands — it is completed, paid in full. We rest in what He has done. Help us to stop striving to finish what He has already finished and to live from the security of His completed work. Thank You that His death also secured the Bride. Keep us faithful to the One who loved us and gave Himself for us. In Jesus’ name, giving thanks for the living Word of the Lord. Amen.
